Q.) How can Artistic Web Design help me register an internet domain name? (i.e.  www.yourname.com)
A.) Artistic Web Design will verify the availability of your requested domain name and submit a registration on your behalf with InterNIC or other applicable internet registry service.  The registration that Artistic Web Design files will include the IP addresses and domain names of the primary and secondary DNS name servers that are operated by Artistic Web Design.

Q.) How long does it take to register a domain name?
A.) Artistic Web Design will register your requested domain name the same day of your written or verbal request, accompanied with your payment.  Approval times can vary depending upon the backlog of requests at the InterNIC or other internet registry service.   Typically, you can expect approval within 72 hours.

Q.) What if someone tries to access my domain name on the web?  Can I post a notice that says my site is under construction?
A.) Posting any information under your domain name would require the activation of a web site.  If you choose to activate a web site for your domain name, a monthly or quarterly web site hosting fee would apply.

Q.) I would like to get a web site, but not a domain name.  How can this be done?
A.) It is possible.  Instead of having your own domain name we can put your web site on our directory.  (i.e. www.webdesign-inc.com/yourname.)

The Basics of Domain Names

What is a Domain Name?*

The best way to think of a domain name is as an alias. In other words, a name that is an easy way of representing something else. This system was designed to make finding individual places on the Internet easy to find.
Back in the early days of the Internet, there were very few places you could go. Because computers are what make up the Internet, and the fact that they communicate via numbers, people used to keep large lists of what numbers represented what computers on the Internet. Of course, as the Internet got bigger, so did the lists and it got too hard to remember all those numbers. Someone then came up with the bright idea of using names instead of numbers to represent computers. They planned this change and decided on a system of top-level names (like .NET, .COM and .ORG) and each of these could second-level names associated with them (like INTERNIC.COM).
Domain Names are these days becoming an individuals or companies way of putting themselves and what they have to say on the Internet. For an organization, a domain name is similar to a customized license plate. Registering a domain name on the Internet is the equivalent of registering a company name at Companies House. Once registered, no-one else can use that name. As there are many companies with similar names, it is important to register a suitable domain name for your company as soon as possible. A domain name is a way by which a company can uniquely identify itself on the internet.
If your company name was Demo, Inc., the domain name would be demo.com . Your website would be located at http://www.demo.com and your email addresses would be in the form of user_name@demo.com.

What domain names can I register?*

There are three different types of domain names that you can register.
. COM
. NET
. ORG
These three are the most valuable and sort after extensions globally.

Who can register a .COM, .NET, or .ORG domain name?
There are no longer any restrictions on who can register in each of these extensions. Anyone can register a .ORG or .NET address. You do NOT have to be a non-profit organization to register a .ORG address nor do you have to be an ISP to register a .NET address. You can register a domain in the name of a company or an individual.

Country Level Extensions
If you find that your desired domain name with the above extensions is already taken, you may wish to consider a .TO extension. .TO is an alternative top level domain extension to the existing .COM, .NET and .ORG domain extensions.
